Talk about yourself. What is your artistic background?
Hola! My name is Rangely García, illustrator, animator, comic book creator and all around freak. I've been drawing since I was 2, been to some art schools, graduated from La Central School of Visual Arts in Santurce, Puerto Rico and got my B.A in Media Arts and Animation at The Art Institute of Ft.Lauderdale. I worked 4 years at a global advertising agency doing illustrations, layouts and storyboards for clients such as Pepsi, M&Ms and Mitsubishi amongst many. I worked doing comic strips for a major newspaper in Puerto Rico (El Nuevo Día). Right now I'm under the guise of a graphic designer and working on my own clothing line.
What is Nightshift about?
Nightshift is a story...wait, let me rephrase that...Nightshift is an AWESOME, EPIC and AMAZINGLY ORIGINAL story about... detective vampires that hunt other occult...dudes... Ok, it's like Scooby Doo, only Scooby and the gang are the monsters and they are solving mysteries about other monsters. Also, instead of a talking, pot smoking dog we have a blood thirsty, retarded looking chihuahua. Which is always awesome.
What attracted you most to do Nightshift?
Well, Angel kinda forced me to do it. I never had a choice. In fact, he is right behind me holding me at gunpoint right now to do this interview. (h3lp!)
How have people reacted to the first chapter of the series?
I have no idea...No, really. I have no idea. This website should have some kind of forum to recieve feedback or hate mail and such...Ow, Angel! I can't type if you shoot my fingers off!
Do you have a different artistic approach in this comic than on other projects? Are there any specific artistic influences?
The first issue of Nightshift, I did with a very cartoony style. I wanted to create a deep contrast between the subject matter, which is pretty dark and the style. Since the story itself has comedy, I think the expressions the cartoony style allows fit really nice. That being said, I'd probably change the style for another issue.
Some of my biggest artistic influences are animators like Chuck Jones, Bob Clampett, Milt Khal and Glenn Keane.
When it comes to illustration and comics, I worship Juanjo Guarnido, Arthur DePins, Alessandro Barbucci, Barbara Canepa, Chris Bachalo, Josh Middleton and Joe Mad.
Angel Fuentes is awesome. Discuss.
What? Hell NO! CALL THE POLIC- ow!....Angel Fuentes is like some sort of god...Ow! Okay, a POWERFUL god. He is awesome. I wish he was my uncle.
How do you see the transition coming from story to visual? Describe the creative process.
My mind is very chaotic when it comes to depicting a story. Things just flash into my mind, I would say that as I am reading the script, a movie appears in my mind and I have to quickly draw thumbnails of what I am seeing, right there at the moment.
When I don't have an amazingly clear and creative script, like Angel's; what I do is that I kinda act out the story and dialogues like some schizofrenic woman.
What is your favorite character to draw from the series so far?
Chewy the chichuahua and Cesar, cuz I draw him like a big mountain and it's just cuddly.
Seriously, How blessed do you feel working with one of the greatest writers in the world: Angel Fuentes?
...*sigh*...
Angel Fuentes is an inspiration...HELP!!!!!!
Do you have any other projects on the works?
I am currently working on a story for a new comic book with my husband Samuel Figueroa. It will be a fantasy story with magic, monsters and lots of fun. Also on the horizon, a publication of my De La Nada! comic strips. I am also working on new season designs for my clothing line, Tripleta™ (www.tripleta.com)
