Interview: Artist Ivonne Falcon and Writer Angel Fuentes
VIOLET DESCENDS CONCEPT & DEVELOPMENT DISCUSSION

Hey, folks! Angel Fuentes and Ivonne Falcon here! We are very excited about our new comic Violet Descends, coming out soon. It’s about an emo angel who abandons her duties as guardian of human emotions in order to get God’s attention.

So, to keep expectations high, here’s a quick interview we did to each other. One question at a time for each! Enjoy!

Angel – Me first! What attracted you most from the story in Violet Descends?

Ivonne - The story has a lot of interesting visuals that I’m trying to maximize with my art. It’s about angels, demons, and other mystical creatures, which allows adding visual effects and story beats beyond what’s common.

My Turn! When and how did you come up with the story? What is your source of inspiration?

Angel - Violet Descends was originally supposed to be the first cross over story in the Razor Blade Apple universe. It was a story in which we would unite most of the mystical characters we have in order to stop this emo angel who came down to earth and wreaked havoc with humanity’s emotions. Several bumps in the road made it difficult to publish the crossover, but I still had the idea of an emo angel in my mind.

Fast forward a few months later, and I was looking for a new project that could match Ivonne’s artistic strengths, which is beautiful female characters on an epic fantasy environment. Violet fit the bill perfectly. And Ivonne got very excited about the characters!

I have to say my source of inspiration for Violet Descends came from an emo girl I met at a party. She showed me a sketch pad with a few drawings I saw that they were cute, but quite depressive, like rainy suicidal day messages. I asked her “Are you emo?” and she got really mad and stormed away with her sketch pad. I guess emo’s don’t like to be called emo’s! Go figure…

Anyhoo! Ivonne, did you have a different artistic approach in this comic than on previous projects?

Ivonne - Not really. I’m still developing my own style. This is barely the second comic I draw (a part from a bunch of short stories). But as always, I like to give details and love to every page I turn out.

So, I’ve noticed that the writing process for Violet Descends takes more time from you than your other scripts. I honestly think this is your best story yet. Is there any difference between and other stories you’ve created? What does this comic mean to you, Angel?

Angel – Ivonne, you cheater! You’re asking me two questions at a time! Violet Descends lies heavily on characterization, unlike Leviathans, which relies more on humor, or Gunbreed that is more plot driven.
This story is special to me because it involves a mix of some really old characters
I created way back in high school, as well as some new ones. I also like to play with Ivonne in developing scenes. I enjoy working with her (I mean you… this is confusing) a lot.

Now, tell the folks out there, how much do you participate in the plotting of the story.

Ivonne - That’s the best part! LOL! Angel lets me dip my spoon in the story every now and then. He lets me give him feed back on his script. That shows that he is willing to incorporate the ideas that are best for the story. And I do trust a lot in him as a writer. He is a very good writer. (Can I get a raise for saying that?)

Speaking of which, what are your future plans for the story?

Angel – No raise! (But keep trying, though, heh heh) I can’t give too much away from the story because issue one is not out yet. However I can give you some things to look for as the series progresses: The destruction of Brasil, the undead parade, someone who sees dead people, life’s rebellion, serial killers, John Lennon, seven deadly sins, and Hitler. Oh, and lots of angels and demons… How’s that?

What is your favorite character to draw from the series?

Ivonne – Uuuh! Hmm... I’d have to go with Evergreen! Lots of pretty butterflies and flowers coming out of her hair. No surprises there! LOL! Although I do like to draw White and Blue a lot.

What do you think of the art? How do you feel working with me, Hector Hoyo (the colorist) and Carlos Mangual (the letterer)

Angel – Are you kidding? The art is the best part of this whole thing! I love spending time looking at every page Ivonne turns in. Very detailed and beautiful! And Hector’s colors take the art to another level. I got nothing but respect for Charlie who fits all of my dialogue into the paneles while making everything look awesome. By the way, I’m really excited to see what people think of Ericka Lugo’s gorgeous alternate painted covers!

Now that you mention art, are there any specific artistic
influences for this comic?

Ivonne – It wouldn’t be strange if you spot something from Alphonse Mucha or Oliver Coipel here or there. They are my two favorite artists.

How do you see the transition coming from story to visual?

Angel – That’s one of the weirdest things. As a writer, I have the whole thing in my head, but whenever I see what Ivonne comes up with it’s so detailed… That’s when everything comes to life for me. The art makes the pictures in my mind look like stick figures!

My final question: What is it like to work with me, compared to other writers?

Ivonne – I’ve worked with four writers so far. Working with Angel is different. Why? He lets me criticize him! Ha, ha! Seriously, he gives me leeway to interpret some things that may or may not be on the script. This lets me make the story mine, and I become more involved with it. Hopefully it shows in the art!

Angel and I are also very good friends and he tolerates me… Trust me. That’s not an easy task at all!

And to wrap things up: Can you give us a little hint on what’s coming in issue number two?

Angel – Hmmm. Ok, well, in issue one we introduce all the angels and some other players. Issue two shows most of the demons, so that one’s going to be darker than the first one.

Stay tuned to razorbladeapple.com for the exact date of release for Violet Descends # 1.
